Bob Shallit - Bob Shallit: Mace's restaurant bowing out July 30 - sacbee.com:

Mace's, one of Sacramento's top eating and meeting spots for the past two decades, is closing. And upscale steak house Ruth's Chris is taking over its digs at Pavilions shopping center.

Mace's will serve its last meal on July 30, says Gayla Mace, who along with husband Bruce founded the popular restaurant in 1985.

She says the restaurant's lease came up for renewal this year. The couple thought long and hard about it. Considered how competitive the market had become. And decided to shut down.

'It's really a bittersweet thing,' she says. They loved the business but they also were ready for a break.

What's next for the Maces? After taking a "breather," they could end up opening another restaurant, Gayla says. If so, they'd like to rehire many of their 85 current employees, some of whom have been at the eatery for 15 years or more.

As for the restaurant's loyal customers, the Maces hope to see them for perhaps a final time at an outdoor bash that will simultaneously be a 20-year anniversary and leaving-business celebration. The date for that isn't set.

News that the Mace's location might become available attracted the attention of Ruth's Chris execs two months ago. Late last week the New Orleans-based chain signed a lease to take over the space.

It will remodel the place after Mace's closes and probably open sometime in the fall, a Pavilions spokeswoman says.

That could be just about the same time the chain - known for prime, aged beef - opens a previously announced outlet at the Galleria at Roseville.
